Pionering Cawoods die

Tshipise. A well-known pionering couple of the Zoutpansberg died last week, three days after each other. The 66 year old Mr Henry Knott CAWOOD passed away on Wednesday after a long illness. His wife, Audrey Patricia (63), died on Saturday, probably of a heart disease.

Henry CAWOOD was born in 1923 on the farm Clouds End near Louis Trichardt. he went to primary school in the area before attending the Johannesburg Technical High School. In Std 9, after being nominated for head boy, World War II broke out and the young Henry immediately left school to join the Air Force.

At the age of 18 he was a qualified Spitfire fighter pilot. By this time he was taken up in the Royal Air Force where he flew in many maneuvers and fought in a number of dog fights.

He was the first Allied pilot to land on the French Riviera after the D-Day invasion. Three years later he returned to his home town to take up farming. He ended up on Hope Farm near Tshipise where he farmed oranges. He and Audrey, Matron of the old Messina Hospital at the time - were married in 1950.

Amongst the things for which this pioneer would be remembered was his participation as a founder member of the Tropic Sun Citrus Co-Op, and the establishment of the Njelele irrigation scheme. The Cawoods leave a daughter, a son and a number of the grandchildren. The funeral took place on Monday on the family farm.
