We decided to hold the Cawood Reunion at Clouds End Hotel, Louis Trichardt to celebrate the anniversary of Claude Cecil CAWOOD's birthday.
The reason that we held the reunion at Clouds End Hotel was that after the 1st World War, Claude Cecil CAWOOD worked for the Pringles in the Southern Orange Free State, however in 1921 he moved to Louis Trichardt and worked for Mr Antrobus on the farm Clouds End. Mr Antrobus was a land surveyor and was away from his farm and Claude had heard that the citrus farmers in the Rustenburg area were exporting their fruit overseas.
He went to Rustenburg to find out how to go about exporting citrus. he was the first person to export citrus from the Soutpansberg area in 1922. The Borcher family were also growing citrus in the Elim area near Louis Trichardt and Claude helped them to export citrus.
Three of Claude and Gertrude's children namely, Henry, George and Samuel were born at Clouds End Farm. We felt that it would be appropriate for us all to get together at Clouds End Hotel. Unfortunately not all of us could attend. There were however 41 of us and we enjoyed a really delicious meal together and caught up on the latest Cawood news. There were a few speaches made and we all had a good party.
The next day we visited the farm L Orange which Claude and Gertrude had bought shortly after they married. June and Benjie were born at L Orange and Dorothy was born in Louis Trichardt. The altitude was too high therefore Claude was unable to grow oranges, however he grew barley and maize and also farmed with marino sheep, pigs and short horn cattle.
We tried to find June's grave but we were unable to, as the farm was too overgrown. The old house was dilapidated. 3
